The Story of a STRAF Hotel & Bar

Opened in 2004, STRAF Hotel & Bar is owned by Sarah Mancino, the daughter of Daniela Bertazzoni who has been managing Grand Hotel et de Milan for years. Stay within eyeshot of the Duomo and just around the corner from Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Aside from the fantastic, central location, you can feel good about staying here.

This is a passion project, blending the worlds of art, design, and environmental sustainability together in a unique space. Mancino’s efforts to be eco-conscious have resulted in the lack of disposable plastic soaps and shampoo bottles for the clients. She hopes to open a dialogue through events such as “Plastic Side of the Sea” which was presented amid Salone del Mobile festivities. You can almost always find Milan Design Week events at this location.

STRAF Hotel Architecture and Interior Design

Interior architect and artist Vincenzo De Cotiis has had his own art and furniture have exhibited at Miami Beach’s Design Miami, New York, London, San Francisco, Paris, and of course Milano. He took on the 64-room project of the 19th-century palazzo, using bold concepts and fine design in the interior architecture and design. His artistic vision presented a synthesis of art, or gesamtkunstwerk, throughout the project. Though the building was already completed, his use of art, accessories, and furnishings were expertly curated to establish STRAF’s unique atmosphere.

“I see STRAF as an installation, a concept which formed the basis for the choice of materials associated with contemporary art, such as ‘Arte Povera’, whilst the way I have used them stems from a design method which is deeply linked to the ethics and aesthetics of recycling objects and placing them in new surroundings.”

Vincenzo De Cotiis
Architect, Artist and Designer

The facade’s classic Italian architecture contrasts the minimalist and industrial design of the interiors as intended by De Cotiis. The interiors are rich in materials creating tactile textures from bare concrete walls and floors, black-stone baths, copper paneling, to polished iron, split slate, aged brass, glass sheets, and gauze. The ambience is anything but standard, heading instead into a striking blend of warmth and relaxed moodiness.
